Byron Bay Classic Day Trip from Brisbane

Byron Bay sits about 165 kilometres south of Brisbane — two and a half to three hours by road, and a full world away. This full-day tour does it properly.

We collect you from your Brisbane CBD or inner-suburb accommodation in the morning and run the M1 south past the Gold Coast, over the border ranges and into the Northern Rivers, arriving at Cape Byron while the light is still good and the headland is still quiet. You'll walk the lighthouse precinct — the light was first lit on 1 December 1901 and remains the most powerful in Australia — and out to the most easterly point of the mainland, where dolphins work the break below and humpback whales pass between May and November.

Then the town is yours for three and a half genuinely unstructured hours: swim at Main Beach, walk out to The Pass, browse Jonson Street's boutiques and galleries, and choose your own lunch from one of the best food scenes in regional Australia. Your guide provides a marked map with honest recommendations by budget and dietary need.

On the return we stop for 45 minutes at Bangalow, the hinterland's prettiest village, before an easy run back into Brisbane by early evening.

Around five and a half hours on the coach across the whole day, 75 minutes at Cape Byron, three and a half hours free in Byron Bay and 45 minutes in Bangalow. One booking, zero logistics.

What to bring:

Swimmers and a towel, sunscreen and a hat year-round, comfortable closed shoes for the lighthouse walk, a light layer for the cape's breeze, a refillable water bottle, and a card or cash for lunch. Binoculars are worth the space between May and November for whale watching.

Accessibility:

Standard coach departures involve steps and are not wheelchair accessible. The Cape Byron stop is on formed paths and boardwalk with some steps and handrails; the most easterly point platform is approximately 300 m from the lighthouse with a moderate descent and return climb.
