Byron Bay Classic Day Trip from Gold Coast

From Coolangatta, Byron Bay is about fifty minutes down the highway; from Surfers Paradise, a little over an hour. That proximity is the whole argument for doing this trip from the Gold Coast — the driving stops being the main event.

We collect you from your Gold Coast accommodation in the morning, cross the Tweed into the Northern Rivers, and have you standing at the most easterly point of mainland Australia before mid-morning. The Cape Byron Lighthouse — first lit on 1 December 1901 and still the most powerful light in the country — is a short walk away, with dolphins below and humpback whales passing between May and November.

The town is then yours for three and a half unstructured hours: swim at Main Beach, walk out to The Pass, browse Jonson Street, or simply take a long lunch. On the way home we stop for 45 minutes at Bangalow before an easy run back up the coast.

Around three hours on the coach across the whole day — roughly half the time of the same tour from Brisbane — with identical time at Cape Byron and in Byron Bay township. You'll be home by late afternoon with the evening still in front of you.

What to bring:

Swimmers and a towel, sunscreen and a hat year-round, comfortable closed shoes for the lighthouse walk, a light layer for the cape's breeze, a refillable water bottle, and a card or cash for lunch. Binoculars are worth the space between May and November for whale watching.

Accessibility:

Standard coach departures involve steps and are not wheelchair accessible. The Cape Byron stop is on formed paths and boardwalk with some steps and handrails; the most easterly point platform is approximately 300 m from the lighthouse with a moderate descent and return climb.
