Byron Surf & Sea Day from Gold Coast
- Duration: 9 Hours (approx.)
- Product code: BYRON-SURF-GC
From Coolangatta, Byron Bay is about fifty minutes down the highway; from Surfers Paradise, a little over an hour. That proximity is the whole argument for doing this trip from the Gold Coast — the driving stops being the main event.
We collect you from your Gold Coast accommodation in the morning, cross the Tweed into the Northern Rivers, and have you standing at the most easterly point of mainland Australia before mid-morning. The Cape Byron Lighthouse — first lit on 1 December 1901 and still the most powerful light in the country — is a short walk away, with dolphins below and humpback whales passing between May and November.
The town is then yours for three and a half unstructured hours: swim at Main Beach, walk out to The Pass, browse Jonson Street, or simply take a long lunch. On the way home we stop for 45 minutes at Bangalow before an easy run back up the coast.
Around three hours on the coach across the whole day — roughly half the time of the same tour from Brisbane — with identical time at Cape Byron and in Byron Bay township. You'll be home by late afternoon with the evening still in front of you.
This version of the day adds a two-hour beginner surf lesson with a local Byron Bay surf school, or a guided stand-up paddleboard session on calmer water if you'd rather stay dry-ish. Byron's gentle beach breaks are among the most forgiving learning waves in Australia and the schools we use specialise in first-timers — most beginners stand up in their first lesson.
Boards, wetsuits, rash vests and instruction are included. Your session sits inside your free-time block, leaving roughly ninety minutes either side for a hot shower and a proper lunch before the coach home.
Included:
Door-to-door pickup and return within the Gold Coast pickup zone. Air-conditioned coach with reclining seats and USB charging. Experienced local driver-guide with commentary. Cape Byron State Conservation Area precinct entry and coach parking fees. Bottled water on board. Marked Byron Bay town map with the guide's recommendations. All tolls, fuel and parking. Fully licensed, insured and accredited operator. Two-hour beginner surf lesson or guided stand-up paddleboard session with a local surf school. Boards, wetsuits, rash vests and instruction. Access to hot showers before departure.
Not included:
Lunch, snacks and drinks. Beach hire (umbrellas, boards, lockers). Personal travel insurance. Souvenirs and market purchases. Gratuities.
What to bring:
Swimmers and a towel, sunscreen and a hat year-round, comfortable closed shoes for the lighthouse walk, a light layer for the cape's breeze, a refillable water bottle, and a card or cash for lunch. Binoculars are worth the space between May and November for whale watching. If you have booked the Surf & Sea day, bring a second towel and a bag for wet gear.
Accessibility:
Standard coach departures involve steps and are not wheelchair accessible. The Cape Byron stop is on formed paths and boardwalk with some steps and handrails; the most easterly point platform is approximately 300 m from the lighthouse with a moderate descent and return climb. Passengers with mobility requirements should contact us before booking on 0409 661 342 — a private charter can usually be arranged with a suitable vehicle and adjusted walking. Infants and toddlers require approved child restraints arranged in advance; please advise ages at the time of booking.
